Paying for a shipment twice through additional charges and adjustments by carriers is a frustrating experience for any business. Carrier adjustments are common when shipping details are not completely accurate. Here are a few important things to consider that will help to eliminate frustration while saving you time and money.
Accurate Measurements
Always ensure your measurements and calculations are accurate. Avoid estimating by using an appropriate scale and measuring tape. Simplify the measurement process by rounding up to the closet whole number.
Dimensional Weight
Some packages are charged based on their dimensional weight rather than actual weight. There is a special formula to calculate large parcels weighing less than their suggested size. Click here to see if your shipment falls under this criteria.
Additional Handling Charges
Carriers will often include additional charges for shipments in wood, metal or even plastic containers. There may also be special handling fees for irregular shaped packages. Carriers will apply additional charges for special handling of packages that include, but are not limited to the following: unpackaged and unwrapped goods; overweight items (more than 70 pounds); and, items not suitable for the carrier’s distribution system.
Correct Address
The receiver’s address must be correct, complete and clear. . Incorrect city, postal code, street number, street name; even down to the unit number and buzz code will warrant a charge.Carriers will apply extra charges if a package cannot be delivered because the address is not accurate or legible. Additional charges will be applicable to each package within a shipment.
Delivery Locations
Keep in mind that deliveries to commercial areas are less expensive than residential areas. Even deliveries to homes or businesses in residential areas are affected by this price gap. Deliveries to and/or from rural or remote locations will be subject to additional charges. Some carriers don’t service these areas directly and will charge extra accordingly.
Understanding Limits
The weight and size of your shipment will determine which carrier can handle it. Weight and size limits vary with each carrier, so it is important to determine the type of package you have before shipping.
Shipping Internationally
Prepare in advance for the extra paperwork for international shipments. Packages can be easily held up at customs if the required documents are missing or incomplete.
