Carrier adjustments are frustrating surprises that can be avoided. Some packages are charged based on their dimensional weight rather than actual weight. There is a special formula to calculate large parcels weighing less than their suggested size. Carriers will charge based on the actual space a package uses during transport (truck or plane).

  • Calculate the cubic size by measuring the length (L), width (W) and height (H) of your package in centimeters or inches
  • Round your measurements to the nearest whole number
  • Multiple your measurements: L x W x H = total cubic size
  • Calculate the shipping factor (*Note : each carrier determines their own shipping factor based on their measurement methods. PLX can simplify this process by finding the accurate shipping factor for your package and chosen carrier.)
  • Put it all together : (L x W x H) / (Shipping Factor) = Dimensional Weight in pounds (lbs) or kilograms (kg)
  • Compare your dimensional weight with the weight from the scale
  • Carriers will charge based on the dimensional weight if it is more than the actual weight; however, some carriers only charge for dimensional weight for packages over 1 cubic foot

All these calculations might seem daunting at first, but understanding how it works will keep your shipping budget on track. Dimensional weight can work in your favour when you pack efficiently. For example, light weight items can be compressed to avoid adjustment charges.
